Lockhart's BBQ Hotspots
Kreuz Market

Kreuz Market stands as a cornerstone of Lockhart's barbecue legacy. Established in 1875 by Jesse Swearingen, it was the town's first meat market, offering smoked pork and beef to the community. In 1900, Charles Kreuz Sr., a German immigrant, acquired the market and renamed it Kreuz Market. The Kreuz family continued to operate the business until 1948, when it was sold to longtime employee Edgar Schmidt. Under Schmidt's ownership, the market flourished, and in 1984, his sons Rick and Don Schmidt took over. In 1999, due to a family split, Rick Schmidt relocated the business to its current location at 619 N. Colorado Street, bringing along the original brick pits and even the hot coals to maintain the tradition. Today, Kreuz Market remains a testament to over a century of barbecue excellence, drawing visitors from around the world to experience its legendary smoked meats

Black's Original Barbeque

Black’s Barbecue has been serving up legendary Texas barbecue since 1932, making it the oldest barbecue restaurant in the state continuously owned by the same family. Founded by Edgar Black Sr., the small market and café grew into one of Lockhart’s most beloved landmarks, known for its slow-smoked brisket, homemade sausage, and generous hospitality. Over the decades, the Black family’s commitment to tradition and quality has never wavered — each generation has carried on the same recipes and pit-smoking methods that put them on the map. Stepping inside the original Black’s feels like stepping back in time, with its vintage décor and the unmistakable aroma of oak-smoked meat filling the air. Today, Black’s Barbecue continues to welcome visitors from all over the world who come to experience true Central Texas barbecue, served with the same family pride and friendly spirit that started it all more than 90 years ago.

Chisholm Trail BBQ

Chisholm Trail BBQ opened its doors in 1978, bringing a fresh and friendly addition to Lockhart’s legendary barbecue lineup. Founded by Reuben M. “Smitty” Schmidt, a former pitmaster from Kreuz Market, Chisholm Trail quickly became a local favorite for its delicious smoked meats, hearty sides, and welcoming, no-frills atmosphere. Known for offering generous portions at down-to-earth prices, it’s the spot where locals and visitors alike can enjoy classic Texas barbecue without all the fanfare — just good food and friendly faces. From tender brisket and smoky sausage to creamy potato salad and peach cobbler, every bite reflects the pride and care that’s made Chisholm Trail a community staple for nearly five decades. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch or grabbing a family-sized plate to go, Chisholm Trail BBQ serves up the same warm Lockhart hospitality that keeps people coming back again and again.

Smitty's Market

Smitty’s Market is a true piece of Lockhart barbecue history. Located in the original Kreuz Market building, its pits have been burning since 1900, making them some of the most historic in Texas. When the Kreuz family moved their business to a new location in 1999, Nina Schmidt Sells — daughter of longtime owner Edgar Schmidt — opened Smitty’s Market in the same beloved space to carry on the family’s barbecue tradition. Walking through the doors, visitors are greeted by the familiar haze of wood smoke, crackling fires, and the unmistakable aroma of brisket cooking the old-fashioned way — over open flames, just as it’s been done for generations. The dining room’s timeworn walls and long wooden tables invite you to slow down, dig in, and soak up the authentic Texas barbecue experience. At Smitty’s, it’s not just about the food — it’s about preserving a legacy that has helped shape Lockhart’s identity as the Barbecue Capital of Texas.

Riley's Pit BBQ

Riley’s Pit BBQ is one of the newer names on Lockhart’s barbecue scene, but it’s already earned a loyal following for its flavorful meats and friendly hometown feel. Founded by Riley Salas, this family-run restaurant first opened in Niederwald before finding its home in Lockhart in 2021. Riley’s quickly became a local favorite, known for its perfectly smoked brisket, juicy ribs, and classic sides that capture the essence of true Texas barbecue. The laid-back atmosphere and genuine hospitality make it a welcoming spot for both longtime residents and visitors discovering Lockhart’s next generation of pitmasters. While honoring the city’s deep-rooted barbecue traditions, Riley’s brings its own fresh energy and flavor to the mix — proving that the spirit of Lockhart barbecue continues to thrive with every new fire lit in the pit.

Terry Black's BBQ

Barbs B Q

Barbs B Q is one of Lockhart’s newest — and boldest — additions to the barbecue capital’s lineup.
